Kabiyuk

Kabiyuk is the oldest state owned farm in Bulgaria, set in a beautiful country side 15 km. away from the city of Shumen, famous with breeding rare and typical local horse breeds.

Long ago in 1864 the governor of Danube Vilayet – Midhat Pasha orders the creation of Kabiyuk, as a state owned horse farm with main purpose of supplying Ottoman army with purebreds. During the Russo-Turkish war of 1878 all horses are taken away and the farm stays empty for several years. The newly created Bulgarian army however desperately needs horses and the farm opens again in 1883.

The first Bulgarian knyaz Alexander Battenberg chooses Kabiyuk for its residence. The pact for the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia was in fact signed here. Today part of the farm is set as a museum of Alexander Battenberg.

Kabiyuk is mostly famous with farming purebreds of course. It is famous with breeding Eastern Bulgarian, Arabian purebred, English purebred, Holsteiner, Hannover, Oldenburg etc. All visitors will have the possibility to enjoy a horse ride, ride in a horse wagon and visit to the “Horse museum”.

The territory of the farm also includes the protected area “Mogilata” or “The Hill”. Botanical survey shows that the diversity of species is different for each of its slopes. It was established that this is the best preserved habitat of steppe vegetation in Bulgaria. On this small piece of land there are more than 200 different weeds and bushes including steppe vegetation.
